The following was received from the EFF by a Bitcoiner in response to an inquiry as to why the the EFF’s “Ways You Can Help” page no longer shows the bitcoin address that previously was provided.
Thank you for contacting the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). At this time, we have determined that legal tender is the best way to help EFF support online civil liberties. When we have completed our review of the options and legalities pertinent to bitcoin, we may make a statement. I’m not certain and I can’t promise anything.

The EFF has received thousands of bitcoins at that address.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling which allows anonymous spending in the campaign finance environment and its impact on elections may be one of the issues triggering this review by the EFF.
Dozens of charitable organizations are now found on the Bitcoin’s wiki’s Donations page and also on the charities page for Bitcoin-related startup witcoin. With Bitcoin’s growing general awareness combined with an upcoming election cyle, the desire to use bitcoins when donating will continue to be a recurring topic.
